Ancient Deep-Sea Relics: Handcrafted Fossilised Whalebone by Haylie Fry

A rare connection to the ancient ocean, Whānau is a collection of one-of-a-kind pieces handcrafted by Haylie Fry from approximately 40-million-year-old fossilised beaked whalebone.

Inspired by traditional forms, the shapes reference the Toki, symbolising strength and courage, and the Roimata (teardrop), representing healing and comfort. Each piece reveals the natural textures and colours preserved within this extraordinary material.

Sold separately or as a set

Dimensions: Toki 75mm x 20mm,  Roimata 65mm x 17mm, Earrings including hoop 50mm length.

The Origin Story

The fossilised whale and dolphin bones were recovered from deep waters surrounding the Chatham Islands by Haylie’s father — a respected deep-sea fisherman with a lifelong passion for the ocean, history, and discovery.

During his career in the fishing industry, he was involved in research and development and served as Captain during the recovery of the Colossal Squid, now housed at .

After discovering these ancient bones caught on long lines many years ago, he became fascinated by their internal structures and colouring, asking Haylie to transform them into something new.

These are the only creations Haylie has made from this remarkable material — a unique meeting point of deep ocean history, craftsmanship, and whānau connection.
