What is it that makes a home?

Is it the walls, the roof, the familiar doorway? The street outside, the view from the window, or the land that surrounds it? Perhaps home is not really a place at all, but the collection of memories, people and small moments that become woven into a sense of belonging.

In Home, the houses gather together within a landscape, connected by winding paths and shared spaces. They are individual, each with its own character, yet somehow part of something larger. It speaks to the way we build our lives around places, and how those places gradually become part of who we are.

Home can be where we grew up, where we have made a life, or somewhere that exists mostly in memory. For some, it can span countries and generations. It can be carried with us, reshaped by time and experience, and found again in the most unexpected places.

Perhaps home is simply the place where something in us feels settled—where we recognise something familiar, and feel that, for a moment, we belong.

A layered, textured composition exploring memory, structure, and place, capturing the quiet architecture of home and landscape.

Artist Statement & Bio

The Terra collection explores memory, structure, and place through layered, intuitive processes. Working across painting and assemblage, these works are constructed surfaces where fragments are cut, repositioned, and reassembled—reflecting the way place is experienced and remembered.
Through the use of reverse glass, board, and collage, the work develops a quiet physical depth. Layered forms suggest shifting landscapes and interior structures, where memory is held, altered, and continuously unfolding.

Santie Cronje is a South African–born artist based in the South Waikato, Aotearoa New Zealand. Her practice explores memory, structure, and place through painting and assemblage, using layered, intuitive processes shaped by migration and lived experience. Her work navigates the space between abstraction and representation, drawing on landscapes, structures, and fragments of place.
