Artist Bio

Linda Thornton is based in the Wairarapa and works from her home studio. She has been captivated by clay for many years, experimenting with various methods, types of clay, and styles before discovering her true passion: sculpting with black clay and using the Japanese technique of Nerikomi. This method allows her to explore and highlight the unique characteristics of coloured clay through layering, cutting, slicing, and folding. The intensity of fascinating glazes on black clay intrigues her with their different effects and finishes. Linda appreciates the clarity of simple forms and the rich, velvet finish of fired black clay. Each of her sculptures is handmade, employing coil and slab techniques to create unique and exclusive pieces. No two of her sculptures are ever the same, ensuring each piece has its own distinct charm and identity
