The CUP Show - Object Release
The Cup Show brings together a small collection of handmade cups by ceramic artists Alex Wilkinson, Peter Black, and Martin Hill. Each artist approaches the vessel in their own way — through pattern, form, glaze, and gesture — yet all share a common intention: creating objects for everyday use.
Cups are among the most intimate of handmade objects. Held daily, they become part of the quiet rituals that shape our mornings and moments of pause.
This small exhibition celebrates the beauty of the handmade cup — functional, tactile, and uniquely individual.
Exhibition Dates
In person: 14 March – 2 April
Online viewing: until 16 April
It would be wonderful to welcome you to see the cups in person. Book your visit online if you’d like to arrange a time.
Alex Wilkinson- Mystery Creek Ceramics
Alex Wilkinson is a Waikato-based ceramic artist and the maker behind Mystery Creek Ceramics. She works in the Japanese technique of nerikomi, layering coloured clays to create intricate patterns within the porcelain. Her cups are functional and tactile, designed for everyday use while bringing colour and playfulness to daily rituals.
Alex’s ceramic patterns range from stripes to mixed-layered surfaces. This year, she is discontinuing all mixed-layered styles (except rainbow) and the orange, red, and purple colours, making these pieces especially collectible.
Peter Black - Rivelin pottery
Peter Black is a Hamilton-based ceramic artist creating functional and decorative vessels for everyday use and special occasions. He enjoys exploring the interplay of metallic glazes, allowing natural flow and subtle “happy accidents” to create unique surprises in each piece.
Peter often makes cups in sets of two, and each is designed to be tactile, practical, and visually engaging.
Martin Hill- Martin Hill Ceramics
Martin Hill is a Scottish-born, New Zealand-based ceramic artist creating wheel-thrown and hand-altered vessels inspired by natural forms and landscapes. His work evolves intuitively through carving and glaze exploration, resulting in cups that are both tactile and functional.
Each piece is unique, reflecting subtle variations in shape, texture, and colour, designed to be held, used, and enjoyed daily.
2026 Exhibitions
Deciduus Gallery & Studio opens each year with a curated programme of exhibitions. Our inaugural show was by gallery owner Santie Cronje, and past exhibitions can be found under Previous Exhibitions.
Threshold by Santie Cronje 19 - 28 February
Threshold was a visual passage, bridging Cronje’s early chapters with the shift from retail to a new studio-led Deciduus. The works engaged in quiet dialogue across her practice, inviting the viewer through veiled layers, subtle gestures, and emotional resonance. The exhibition explored the space between what is held and what is revealed, between narrative and abstraction, and between the personal and the universal.
